Premium Efficiency Motors

The state-based initiative for “MotorUp” for Massachusetts and Nantucket will continue in 2008, offering businesses energy savings opportunities to reduce the impact of rising energy costs by installing NEMA Premium™ efficient motors. The goal in sponsoring this program is to educate end-users about how to save money by installing premium-efficiency equipment and how to manage motor systems better, including installation of variable speed drives and by offering financial incentives for the purchase of qualifying new equipment.

Target Market

The MotorUp program was a regional program from 1998 – 2006. Beginning in 2007, MotorUp has been a coordinated state-wide for Massachusetts and Nantucket customers. The Massachusetts MotorUp Program for National Grid customers, is a component of the Design 2000plus Program. It is designed to respond quickly to a customer who has a motor fail in their facility and is in need of a replacement immediately; or a motor brought into stock in anticipation of a motor failure.

Incentives are available to industrial, commercial, institutional and agricultural electric service customers. Motors must be installed or stocked in service territories of participating EEPPs. Motors covered by the program must be new, three phase, induction motors, NEMA Design A & B, 1-200 HP, Open Drip Proof (ODP) or Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC), 1200, 1800, or 3600 RPM. Other motors may be eligible for rebate under other EEPPs’ efficiency programs.

Key Program Features

Design incentives are available to maximize efficiency opportunities. Incentives are designed to cover up to 75% of the incremental cost of the equipment.

• Prescriptive rebates are for new, installed or stocked NEMA Premium™ motors (ODP or TEFC) $45 to $700 on motors from 1 to 200 hp.
• Rebates are paid to either the dealer or the customer, at the customer’s option.
• Custom rebates are available for technologies not covered by prescriptive.
• Instant rebates are provided at motor dealer sites through participation in MotorUp.
• The Massachusetts MotorUp application is also used as a Design 2000plus new motors application (this is not for replacement of existing motors in operation).
• No pre-inspection required; post inspections are conducted on 5% of the applications based on a random selection process.
• Special program services are available for customers with over 50 motors in their facility, as a pilot program for 2008 (National Grid customers only), interested in incorporating a comprehensive motor management plan and replacement of motor systems (including variable speed drives).

To qualify for an incentive, the motor(s) must operate a minimum of 2,000 hours per year.
